Learn More About Drax’s Plans for a Biomass-Powered Data Center
A United Kingdom utility that uses wood pellets as an energy source has revealed plans to partner in establishing a data center fueled by biomass.
The project, launched by Drax at its North Yorkshire power station, is expected to cost 20 billion pounds or $22.4 billion. Drax is partnering with the investment company Brookfield and energy infrastructure developer Radiant.
The North Yorkshire plant’s primary fuel source is wood pellets.
Drax announced that the site will be developed in phases, with the first phase expected to produce 100MW of power in early 2028. The power station utilizes about 1,000 acres.
“The UK Government is clear that countries able to host and power data centres will be better placed to protect their own sovereignty and strengthen economic resilience, capture the benefits of the digital economy and shape the future of AI,” according to the announcement from Drax.
Chief Secretary to the U.K. Treasury Emma Reynolds said, “Investments like this will help pave the way to a new age of British reindustrialization, creating good jobs in Yorkshire and delivering growth right across the country.”
