Legislation has been introduced in Congress with bipartisan support to expedite work to manage and prevent wildfires more effectively and increase the scale of forest restoration projects.
The effort to pass the legislation was led by Congressmen Bruce Westerman, Republican Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources, and Scott Peters, a Democratic Congressman from California, a state that has been massively impacted by wildfires in the last decade.
Westerman is a professional forester, having received a Masters degree in forestry from Yale University, and represents Arkansas. Peters is an attorney and has served as a staff economist for the Environmental Protection Agency.
The legislation is intended to encourage cooperation in forestry improvements between, federal, state, local, and tribal governments.
It is also intended to speed up the resolution of lawsuits that slow down or block needed projects for forest resilience.
