Michigan stood out from its neighbors for its more robust timber markets in the first quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, both Minnesota and Wisconsin had little activity.
Michigan’s relatively faster harvest schedule may reflect eagerness to capture the remains of the March 2025 impacted wood. Damage from the storm takes a greater toll from insects and disease.
County forests in Wisconsin—the most robust source of timber in the state — showed almost no activity in January through March. But action has picked up in April and early May.

Michigan had stronger activity, but prices were generally soft in the quarter. Pine sawlog prices were down 10% from the prior year. Cordwood prices for the species were down by 8%. Cordwood prices seemed to be getting stronger in the second quarter.
