New deforestation regulation from the European Union will go into effect at the end of this year. The regulations have been modified twice since their introduction in 2023 due to adverse reactions and confusion regarding the regulations on the part of forest products companies.

The EU stated that the regulations, as modified, will guarantee “legal stability and predictability”.

“These measures together will lead to a substantial reduction in administrative burden. They are expected to reduce annual compliance costs for companies subject to EUDR obligations by about 75%, compared to the original EUDR (regulations)”, the EU statement said.

The regulations are intended to fight deforestation internationally. Opposition from U.S. companies and U.S. government representatives has been based on the part that American forestry practices effectively eliminate the risk of deforestation.

The EU report argues, “... that the EUDR is already contributing to structural changes in global supply chains, with increased investment in traceability and more transparency, thereby supporting more sustainable and competitive production practices.”

The regulations detailed information on the origin of raw materials, including geographic coordinates for plantations and forest areas. They apply to European companies operating within the EU market and companies importing materials from other countries to the European Union countries.
