Weyerhaeuser, Aymium Partner on Biocarbon Production
Read about Weyerhaeuser Backing a Biocarbon Facility in Mississippi.
Weyerhaeuser Company has committed to a partnership that will produce 1.5 million tons of biocarbon for use as a replacement for metallurgical coal in the production of steel and other metals. In a joint venture with Aymium, they will develop a jointly owned facility adjacent to the Weyerhaeuser mill in McComb, Mississippi, that will make the biocarbon material from wood fiber by a low-emissions process.
Aymium has a patented process to develop the biocarbon from wood waste products. Metallurgical coal is typically required to make coke, an essential ingredient in the steel blast furnace process.
Weyerhaeuser is the United States’ largest private timberland owner. It also announced a large new engineered wood products facility for Monticello, Arkansas in June.
Aymium produces biocarbon at a facility in Marquette, Michigan from lignocellulosic biomass, including agricultural residue and forest and sawdust residue. This biocarbon initiative joins a planned engineered wood facility planned for Monticello, Arkansas, by Weyerhaeuser as a new user for its low-grade wood fiber.
