A second Lake States paper machine is projected to restart in 2025, coinciding with the restart of Legacy Port Huron Paper mill’s machine #8 in Port Huron, Michigan. The mill is expected to produce 30,000 tons annually of lightweight specialty food paper after being shut down for four years.

The Port Huron, Michigan, mill has been producing paper since 1888.

A second machine restart was announced recently by ND Paper in Biron, Wisconsin. It is also expected to restart this year to produce linerboard and corrugated paper.

"The fundamentals driving specialty paper demand have never been stronger," said Mark Bessette, Managing Director of The Legacy Paper Group. "Consumer behavior shifts accelerated by the pandemic, combined with intensifying focus on packaging sustainability, have created a significant supply-demand imbalance that PM8 is uniquely positioned to address."

In its announcement of the reopening, the company credited public attention to “packaging sustainability” for increasing demand for paper, due in part to the lack of environmental concerns with “oil-based plastics and microplastic pollution”.
