New Logistics Wood Hub in Michigan
Learn How Chippewa County Launches Major Wood Products Hub...
Michigan is moving ahead with a logistics hub to advance shipping facilities available to the forest products industry in Chippewa County in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Ground has been broken in Kincheloe along I-75, about 10 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie on a 20,000 square foot logistics hub. The 20,000 square foot facility also abuts the CN rail line.
The Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation, with support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, partnered with Maple Transport Inc. on the project. The project in Kincheloe will include a 2.5-mile rail spur to the CN line.
The project is supported by $5.8 million in funding from the federal Economic Development Administration, with $1.25 million in support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Additional funding was received from the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation.
The facility will include room for additional business tenants. Improvement of multi-faceted logistics, including rail for forest products, has been a goal in the Lake States since 2020 or earlier.
